THE BLUE YONDER

Responsible Tourism

Mission Statement

At The Blue Yonder, we are committed to creating better places for people to live and visit by leading in socio-cultural, environmental, and economic sustainability. In response to climate change-induced challenges, we have added climate resilience as a key pillar of our mission. Through innovative initiatives and community engagement, we strive to co-create climate-resilient and climate-responsible destinations for the future.

Sustainable Tourism
Policy

The Blue Yonder's updated 2024 Sustainability Policy focuses on responsible tourism to foster sustainable development in the destinations they operate. The policy is grounded in a quadruple bottom line approach, emphasizing economic prosperity, environmental well-being, social equity, and climate resilience. Key elements include supporting local communities, promoting fair labor practices, minimizing environmental impact, and fostering cultural heritage. The company aims to integrate sustainability across all operations, maintain legal compliance, and prioritize social and environmental concerns. Employee engagement, continuous improvement, and transparent communication are crucial for implementing these practices. The policy also emphasizes sustainable supply chains and responsible transportation options.

Policy in Action

The Blue Yonder's 2024 Sustainability Policy Action Plan outlines its commitment to sustainable tourism through a quadruple bottom-line approach: economic prosperity, environmental well-being, social equity, and climate resilience. Key focus areas include reducing carbon emissions, implementing regenerative tourism projects, preserving cultural heritage, promoting inclusiveness, and fostering community-based tourism. Specific goals include reducing carbon emissions by 20% by 2025, training local artisans, developing inclusive travel itineraries, and implementing climate resilience strategies. The plan emphasizes continuous improvement, employee engagement, and transparent communication to ensure sustainable development and community empowerment.

Glasgow Declaration
by The Blue Yonder

The Blue Yonder, as one of the eight launch partners and signatories of the Glasgow Declaration, commits to a comprehensive sustainability action plan focusing on four main pillars: measure, decarbonise, regenerate, and collaborate. The company plans to conduct a detailed carbon footprint assessment, working with climatologists and other experts to quantify emissions related to energy consumption and waste generation in their travel operations. We aim to establish a baseline for emissions by 2023-24 and implement measures to track and reduce these emissions, involving staff in sustainability efforts and collaborating with local communities and scientific partners.

Responsible Tourism Networking

With a focus on building community resilience in destinations, The Blue Yonder has been repurposing it’s business and urging tourism resources and tools globally to respond to disasters. This has become more relevant in times of increased frequency in climate change related disasters. So far we have responded to more than ten major disasters that have caused USD 5 Billion losses for destinations. This ranges from Asian Tsunami, Cyclone Aila, Nepal Earthquake, Chennai floods and Kerala floods.
