Rainforest Treks in Vazhachal

Vazhachal is a captivating region located near the renowned Athirappilly waterfalls in Kerala, known for its dense rainforests and diverse ecosystems. Nestled in the Chalakudy River Basin, Vazhachal is a part of the Western Ghats, one of the world’s eight “hottest hotspots” of biological diversity. The Chalakudy River, which flows through this region, is not only a scenic marvel but also a critical ecological artery supporting a vast array of flora and fauna.

This area is distinguished by its rich biodiversity, including several endemic and endangered species. The rainforests of Vazhachal are home to a variety of wildlife, such as the Lion-tailed Macaque, Malabar Giant Squirrel, and numerous species of hornbills. The forest canopy is lush with a wide range of trees, medicinal plants, and other flora unique to the Western Ghats.

In addition to its natural beauty, Vazhachal holds significant cultural value. It is inhabited by the Kadar community, an indigenous group known for their deep knowledge of the forest and its resources. The Kadar people have lived in harmony with nature for centuries, making them integral to the region’s conservation efforts.
