Nilāvala

Twilight Dinner on a Chinese Fishing Net.

Creating Connections: Immersive Cultural Journeys with The Blue Yonder

Nilāvala - Twilight Dinner on a Chinese Fishing Net is a unique experience that can be enjoyed independently or as part of a combined half-day "Pokkali: The Story of a Rice" tour. The evening begins with a 30-minute punting session in a traditional country boat along Veeran-puzha at 5:30 pm. Guests are then transferred to the Chinese fishing net platform for a sunset view and an early dinner featuring locally sourced rice, Kerala porotta, patthiri, steamed tapioca with fish curry, fish fry, prawns, and sulaimani tea. The initiative, known as #Nilavala, not only provides a dining experience but also repairs fishing nets, repurposing their platforms for sunset viewing. The food is sourced locally, supporting the community, and the trained fishers, now skilled in water sports, become first responders during natural disasters for hyper-local interventions.

Ezhikkara

A small island village surrounded by water bodies, including Veeranpuzha, faces the challenges of climate change. The impacts include more frequent tidal flooding, heightened salinity in freshwater sources, and a decline in marine and freshwater life, affecting the livelihoods of local fishers who depend on traditional practices.

Climate change has led to reduced catches, prompting some fishers to shift from repairing iconic Chinese Fishing Nets to engaging in cage fishing as an alternative source of income.
