HISTORY & LEGENDS

Mannarasala Serpent Temple - Alleppey

Sree Nagaraja Temple, located in Mannarasala near Haripad in the Alappuzha (Alleppey) district of Kerala, is a renowned Hindu temple dedicated to Nagaraja, the serpent king. It is one of the most famous snake temples in Kerala and is deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual fabric of the region.
The temple is believed to have been established by Parasurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu. It is considered a prime center of worship for serpent gods, particularly Nagaraja and Nagayakshi (serpent queen). Devotees believe that worshipping here brings protection from snake bites, fertility, and prosperity.
The temple is set in a lush, forested area, contributing to its serene and mystical ambiance. The temple complex includes over 30,000 images of snakes along the paths and among the trees, and the main deity, Nagaraja, is housed in the central sanctum.
The most significant festival at Sree Nagaraja Temple is the Ayilyam Mahotsavam, celebrated on the Ayilyam star in the Malayalam month of Thulam (October/November). This festival attracts thousands of devotees who come to offer special poojas and participate in the rituals. It includes a grand procession where serpent idols are taken from the temple to the Illam (ancestral home).
