An immersive experience
The Mangrove Trail offers a 3-hour punting experience through mangroves, visit to a
mangrove conservation nursery, boat ride with a naturalist, birdwatching, and concludes at Fort
Kochi's estuary, allowing guests to join in seed and sapling collection. The initiative aims to preserve
Ernakulam's second-largest mangrove forest and address plastic waste, aligning with circular
economy practices and the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Emergency.
The picturesque punting experience through the mangroves in Vyppin, near Fort Kochi, is the result of a conservation initiative in collaboration with the Resilient Destinations Foundation. Ernakulam boasts the second-largest mangrove forest of approximately 32 square kilometres, primarily in Vypeen, Mundamveli, Maradu, and near Kundanoor Bridge. Comprising 16 mangrove tree species, this "super forest" plays a vital role in breeding fish, crabs, and mollusks while sequestering 34% more carbon than regular forests. The ongoing restoration project, supported by various foundations, involves setting up mangrove nurseries, distributing saplings to coastal panchayats, and planting over two hundred thousand saplings, managed by community initiatives.
The initiative also addresses plastic waste by daily collection and conversion into pellets for road construction, aligning with the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Emergency for impactful circular economy practices.
