The Initiative

The backwater history tour was designed to give an in-depth and immersive experience to the travellers as well as the host. An attempt to showcase the backwater beyond the leisurely house boat trip. The trail is designed in consultation with a local scientists community that has been working in Climate Change, agriculture and livelihood.

Kerala is famous for backwater tourism. Most of the cruises happen in the Vembanad region where guests are taken in traditional kettuvallams. This region constitutes the largest lake in the state, renowned for its extensive network of rivers, canals, and lagoons.

Recognised as a Ramsar site since 19th August 2002, the Vembanad Wetland, including Vembanad Lake, holds international acclaim for its ecological importance. This multifaceted ecosystem is a popular tourist destination, offering boat rides through interconnected waterways and unique stays in traditional houseboats.

Beyond tourism, the region's wetlands support diverse flora and fauna, contributing to its ecological significance. The area also plays a vital role in paddy cultivation, particularly in the Kuttanad region. Conservation efforts, like the Vembanad Wetland Conservation Program, aim to sustainably manage and preserve this delicate ecosystem, aligning with its Ramsar site status that emphasises global recognition and commitment to conservation.
