A Ritual Art of VibrantMasks
and Movements
Padayani is a ritual art form performed in central Kerala, particularly in temples dedicated to the goddess Bhadrakali. Known for its colorful masks, vibrant costumes, and rhythmic drum beats, Padayani is a ceremonial dance that narrates mythological stories of goddess Kali’s triumph over evil forces. The performers don elaborate masks representing divine and demonic characters, creating a captivating visual spectacle.
Padayani performers draw upon Kalaripayattu’s movements, incorporating high-energy leaps, spins, and controlled gestures. The martial influence is evident in the agility, coordination, and physical discipline required to execute the performance.
