An Evening of Margamkali

Kerala’s Christian Heritage Through Dance

Introduction to Margamkali

Margamkali is a traditional group dance of the Syrian Christian community of Kerala, celebrated for its spiritual and cultural significance. The term “Margam” means “path” in Malayalam, symbolizing the Christian way of life introduced by St. Thomas the Apostle. Performed by men or women in circular formations, the dance features synchronized steps, hand claps, and songs sung in ancient Malayalam, recounting biblical stories and the life of St. Thomas.

Connection to Kalaripayattu

Margamkali incorporates stances, footwork, and rhythmic patterns influenced by Kalaripayattu. The performers’ disciplined movements reflect the martial art’s physical precision, agility, and spiritual focus, connecting Margamkali to Kerala’s broader cultural traditions.
