The Lalbaug area of Mumbai is the heart of the textile mill industry that flourished here in the 1800s to the late 1900s. This walk provides a great cultural introduction to the area and its people. We will explore the religious, economic, political and social fabric of this multi-cultural area which is home to Marathi-speaking Hindus as well as small communities of Parsis and Muslims.

As you walk through its busy streets, you can feel the pulse of the religious, social and economic vibrancy of India, even as the exotic smells of Indian spices wafts through your nose! Lalbaug’s famous spice market of cinnamon, nutmeg, chillies, tobacco will tempt your purse!

Lalbaug is also known for its farsan or fried snack market called Chivda Galli, bustling vegetable & fish markets, and shops selling all types of general items. After the walk through buzzing markets, we will visit the BhauDaji Lad Museum which is located at Byculla zoo. In the zoo grounds, we can see the stone elephants from which Elephanta caves gets its name.
