Highlights of Udaipur

    Highlights of Udaipur is a guided tour that covers the most famous landmarks of Rajasthan's most romantic city. Udaipur is renowned for its beautiful palaces, lakes and gardens. This trip combines the best of the lot into a concise 5 hour itinerary. Here are some of the landmarks that travellers will explore through the duration of this trip:  

• City Palace Udaipur: The City Palace is a fabulous place, with marble and granite walls that support the famous miniature paintings. Tiles, glass and mirror work adorn the palace walls and corridors. One part of the palace is now a museum, which we will visit. We will walk through the many palaces and courtyards within the compound, all connected by passages.  Zenana Mahal, the women’s quarters, has intricate windows and alcoves that are particularly eye catching.
• Jagdish Temple: An active temple  built in the year 1651, this is an intricately carved structure – the outer walls and spires have many beautiful carvings. Dedicated to Vishnu, you will see devotees as well as prayers being conducted.
• Saheliyon ki badi: Garden of the Maids of Honour, we will stroll through this elegant garden that is said to have been made for the young female attendants who accompanied a princess who came to Udaipur to marry.
• Vintage car collection: The Maharaja of Udaipur has a famed collection of vintage and classic cars, housed in a heritage circular garage. Dating back to a time when there were no other car owners in the city, the garage even has a Burmah Shell petrol pump!

Day Excursion to Chittorgarh Fort

    This day trip to Chittorgarh Fort focuses on exploring the ruins of Chittor, dramatic with its palaces, temples, towers and reservoirs. This ancient city was the capital of the Mewar kingdom for over 800 years. The stories surrounding the city, and its dashing rulers, are the stuff of legends and lore. During its colorful and eventful history, there were many battles won and lost – the ones lost remain in memory for the dramatic events that followed. Invading Muslim rulers ransacked the fort and as the men were defeated in battle, the women and children of the royal households committed suicide via Jauhar (self-immolation) – considered by the fierce warrior culture of the Rajputs to be preferable to capture and shame by the invading forces. The fort was abandoned in 1567, and left unoccupied, after the last attack that year. Here's a short summary of the highlights of this trip. • The ruins of Rana Kumbha's Palace, including elephant and horse stables, a Shiva temple, the royal treasury.
• Vijay Stambha (Victory Tower) erected by Rana Kumbha to commemorate his victory over Mahmud Shah I Khalji.
• Kirti Stambha (Tower of Fame) dedicated to Adinath.
• Padmini’s Palace, where it is believed that Alauddin Khilji was permitted to look at her through a mirror
• Temple to Kalika Mata, the fierce goddess

The Bazaars and Bathing Ghats of Udaipur

    Ghats (steps) that lead down to the river, are a common sight in many Indian towns; Udaipur is known for its bathing ghats. Join a local storyteller as he leads you on a winding maze through the bazaars and bathing ghats of Udaipur.   You'll begin at the Jagdish Temple, built in 1651 - one of the city’s prime tourist spots. You will follow a path that takes you through Gangaur Ghat in the heart of the city, to the Ghantaghar (Clock Tower). You will be led through an array of local markets, including stops at several shops so you can pick up the ubiquitous fabrics and silver jewellery. We will then move on to the Mochiwada or Shoe Market, Utensils Market, Sabzi Mandi (vegetable market), Kumbharwada (Potters’ Colony), Wariyon ki Ghati (Leaf workers’ Ghat), Kasara ki Ol (Metalworkers’ bazaar) and circle back to Jagdish Temple to end the walk.
