Rajasthan’s largest city, and its capital Jaipur, is a study in pink thanks to all buildings being either constructed of pink stone or painted pink. The city came into existence in the 18th century, and went truly pink in 1876, during Queen Victoria’s visit to India. The then Maharaja of Jaipur painted the entire city pink in color to welcome the guests, since pink symbolized hospitality. Well over a 100 years later, the tradition continues – in fact, by law now, all buildings in Jaipur must be painted pink! Jaipur is also notably India’s first planned city, divided into six sectors with broad streets. Jaipur epitomizes the color and splendor of the desert state of Rajasthan, and is home to spectacular forts, palaces, markets and distinctive fabrics, works of art and jewellery.
